Nintendo Switch Online Has a New Free Surprise for Mario Kart World Fans

Nintendo Switch Online has a new, free surprise for Mario Kart World fans. The Nintendo Switch 2 released this week alongside a new Mario Kart game, Mario Kart World, which is the console’s big launch game and, ultimately, its only consequential launch game. Perhaps it should come as no surprise that to accompany the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2, and the release of the first Mario Kart game since Mario Kart 8 was released in 2014, Nintendo has a new Mario Kart World freebie for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers. And unlike some new Nintendo Switch Online offers — such as access to GameCube games — this new offer is not locked behind the Expansion Pack tier, but is rather available to all NSO subscribers regardless of the tier of their subscription. More specifically, Nintendo Switch Online subscribers — on not just Nintendo Switch 2, but Nintendo Switch as well — can now download several different NSO icons featuring Mario, Peach, Bowser, and more, all of which range from five Platinum Points to ten Platinum Points each to redeem. That said, the whole collection of icons will be divided up across seven waves, with each wave running exactly one week. To this end, the first wave is available until June 11, while the final wave will complete on July 23. Once gone, each icon will become unavailable, and while Nintendo does release icons again, it is seldom, and typically when it does it locks the second release behind owning whatever the associated game is. wave 1′ Future waves will feature characters such as Luigi, Daisy, Rosalina, Bowser Jr, Donkey Kong, Paulina, Shy Guy, Wario, King Boo, Birdo, Yoshi, and Cow. Oddly, some characters — in fact many characters — are missing. That said, as you can see by comparing the two images, the roadmap image below does not feature every icon available in the first wave, so there is opportunity for subsequent waves to have additional characters. Addison Rae Is So Princess Peach

Photo-Illustration: Vulture; Photos: Taylor Hill/FilmMagic, Nintendo Mario Kart World is here, and you and everyone you know is playing as a cow. This game arriving on the cusp of a summer once again run by pop girlies — Sabrina, Addison, OG 1989, Beyoncé tour, whatever the hell Reneé Rapp gets up to — feels like no great coincidence. Like Mario Kart World, the pop-girlie landscape is full of colorful characters for whom we’re meant to point at the screen and go “okay, me.” These pop stars probably have more important things to do than hop on Mario Kart World with one another, but also, maybe they don’t. Chalk it up to a rare 80-degree day in New York City or overwhelming TGIF energy, but here’s who Vulture thinks the pop girlies are playing in Mario Kart World. Addison Rae, Princess Peach No need to overthink this one. One of the most prominent blondes of our time is going for one of the most prominent blondes of all time. Sabrina Carpenter, Toadette This one is tricky: Carpenter has a kind of playful Birdo energy, but she is also the short person in culture right now (sorry, Tom Cruise). She’s going for short-queen solidarity and picking a perennial little sweetie. Lorde, Dry Bones Her album cover for Virgin literally has bones on it. Charli XCX, Waluigi Waluigi is brat. Reneé Rapp, Bowser Rapp presents herself as a bit of a chaotic villain, not unlike the Mario world’s ultimate big bad. That’s not to say we think Rapp is evil, but we do think she’s approaching the race with a mischievous bent and an overwhelming desire to knock the other racers off the course. Ice Spice, Bowser Jr. One notable ginger is likely to opt for another notable ginger. Chappell Roan, Donkey Kong Two cultural disrupters coming together to maximize their joint, uh, speed slay. PinkPantheress, Baby Peach PinkPantheress is one of culture’s foremost little sisters, and it makes sense that one ingenue would go for princess-in-training prior to taking the crown. Tate McRae, Yoshi This one feels a little random — then again, so does the ongoing presence of McRae in the pop landscape. Billie Eilish, King Boo In a pop landscape saturated with singers who aren’t afraid to be a little spooky, we imagine Eilish commits all out to King Boo’s sinister glee. His being royal and her having two Oscars feels oddly fitting too. Lana Del Rey, Rosalina Rosalina is the newest and most ethereal of the Nintendo princesses, and Del Rey’s otherworldly quality feels like an apt fit. Her Instagram handle is “@honeymoon,” and Rosalina is from space, like, where the moon lives. Ariana Grande, Tanooki Mario Tanooki Mario is basically a character from Wicked. We see dog mom and animal lover Grande going for one of the game’s cutest critters. Miley Cyrus, Mayor Pauline Miley’s transition from enfant terrible to one of the industry’s most creative staples suggests a kind of mid-career stability present in damsel in distress turned politician Pauline. Katy Perry, Daisy Obviously!!! Taylor Swift, Cat Peach Obviously times two!!! Lady Gaga, Mario To quote my co-worker Rebecca Jennings, “What kind of freak plays as Mario?” Exactly. Beyoncé, Cow I’m not saying this to be rude. I’m saying this for two reasons: (1) Beyoncé is literally Cowboy Carter — what’s more country than the cow from Moo Meadows? — and (2) the cow has quickly become the most iconic character in Mario Kart World. Beyoncé would recognize this immediately and opt for the most fun, beloved character on the racetrack. Benson Boone, Monty Mole Okay, this one I am saying to be rude. Nintendo Switch Online Reveals New Zelda Freebies

Nintendo Switch Online subscribers can now claim freebies based on a pair of classic games in the Zelda franchise. This time around, Nintendo is offering designs based on Zelda II: The Adventure of Link on NES and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on N64. As is often the case when Nintendo adds icons based on older games, there is a catch: subscribers must access these games through their corresponding Nintendo Classics app before they can then claim the icons. However, as long as the software is launched from the app, the icons can be claimed immediately after without actually playing the software. For The Adventure of Link, Nintendo has added five icons, each of which can be claimed for 10 Platinum points each. All of the designs are based on the pixel designs that appeared in the original NES game. The icons for Ocarina of Time are a little different, and are instead based on art from the game. Nintendo offered a more significant amount of icons for the N64 game, with 13 in total. There are multiple designs based on Link in both his young and adult incarnations, along with characters like Sheik, Ganondorf, Navi, and more. After launching either game, subscribers will be rewarded with 50 Platinum points, with a total of 100 for both. icons based on two zelda games are available now through june 30th Perception around Zelda II: The Adventure of Link isn’t the best; the game’s high level of difficulty has earned it a rough reputation with many fans of the series. However, Ocarina of Time is widely considered one of the best video games of all-time. Since its release back in 1998, the N64 game has continued to appeal to new audiences. If you’ve somehow never played the original game, this batch of Nintendo Switch Online freebies is the perfect excuse to discover what you’ve been missing over the years. The game holds up very well, and completely changed the direction of future Zelda titles, as well as the industry as a whole. In addition to these profile icons, Nintendo Switch Online subscribers can now find music based on The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom in the Nintendo Music app. For the game, Nintendo has added a stunning 344 tracks, which translates to nearly 12 hours of music! There are still several Zelda soundtracks that aren’t in the app yet, but it’s likely we’ll see that list continue to shrink over time. RELATED: LEGO Zelda: The Great Deku Tree Set Review: Worthy of the Legend The future of the Zelda series is a big question as we head into the Nintendo Switch 2 era later this week. Several Zelda games on Switch will be getting upgrades on the new system, including Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom, Link’s Awakening, and Echoes of Wisdom. However, Nintendo has yet to announce an actual new Zelda game, outside of a Hyrule Warriors spin-off. Hopefully that will change in the not too distant future, but for now, fans will have to settle for currently existing games in the series. Do you plan on claiming any of these free profile icons?
